SLIDE MOUNTING INSECT SETTING INSECT COLLECTION LABELING MATERIALS FOR INSECT COLLECTION -ethyl acetate -pinning block -killing jar

INSECT COLLECTION  Collecting, preparing and identifying insects are fundamental and essential skills for entomology.  To learn and develop these skills, you will prepare and submit an insect collection by the end of this course.  20% of your grade will depend on your collection.  Individual effort

INSECT COLLECTION Total Possible Points: 40 POINTS  Minimum requirement of the collection  8 insect orders: (8 points)  No. of specimens: 30 species (half point for every species = (15 points). At least 15 species are pests  Insect Larvae or Pupae: 2 types of any larvae or pupae = (2 points)

INSECT COLLECTION  Presentation: Organization, Labelling and Mounting Technique (15 points)  Each specimens must be correctly and neatly labeled to be worth credit.  Badly damaged specimens will not count.  Mounting and labeling skills will be covered in lab.  Neatness is important!

INSECT COLLECTION  Correct identification  Students are expected to identify up to family level except for major/common pests (up to genus/species).  Extra Credit Considerations  More Diversity Collection that represent an outstanding diversity which means more than 8 orders and 30 species but on one condition, they must be accurately identified. GOOD LUCK & HAVE FUN WITH ENTOMOLOGY!
