A Study In The Book Of Hebrews

Hebrews Overview Chapters 1 - 2 – Jesus, Name Above All Names Chapters 3 - 4:13 – Yes, A Sweet Rest Is Remaining Chapters 4:14 - 7 – Christ Receiveth Sinful Men Chapters 8 - 10:18 – The New Song Chapters 10:19 - 12 – Faith Of Our Fathers

Hebrews Who Wrote the Book of Hebrews? It is my personal conviction that Paul wrote the letter Passages are cited in this book that are referenced by Paul elsewhere Heb. 1:5 > Ps. 2:7 = Acts 13:33 “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You” Heb. 10:38 > Hab. 2:3-4 = Rom. 1:16; Gal. 3:11 “The just shall live by faith”

Hebrews Who Wrote the Book of Hebrews? It is my personal conviction that Paul wrote the letter Passages are cited in this book that are referenced by Paul elsewhere The author was one who had been in prison and care, in some way, had been sent. This happened with Paul Phil. 4:10-20

Hebrews Who Wrote the Book of Hebrews? It is my personal conviction that Paul wrote the letter Passages are cited in this book that are referenced by Paul elsewhere The author was one who had been in prison and care, in some way, had been sent. This happened with Paul There is a direct reference to Timothy in the benediction and farewell. Timothy was Paul’s closest companion in preaching the gospel He went with Paul on the 2nd and 3rd Missionary Journeys He was a recipient of two letters and mentioned by name in at least eight other NT books of Paul

Hebrews Who Wrote the Book of Hebrews? It is my personal conviction that Paul wrote the letter If Paul wrote the letter, why would he leave off his name? To answer that question you have to look at who the audience of the letter is: The Hebrews! If you lived in the first century, where would you have to go to find a church made up of just Jewish Christians? Jerusalem! The letter is most likely for those in Jerusalem (the city where Paul was hated the most!)

Jesus, Name Above All Names Heb. 1:1-4 This is the largest sentence in the Bible The writer wastes no time elevating Christ Christ is the recipient of all things (Col. 1:19-20) Christ is the creator of all things (Col. 1:16) When you see Jesus you see the Father (Jn. 14:8-11) Jesus sustains all that is real in this world (Col. 1:17) Jesus purged our sins and saved our souls (1 Pet. 2:24) Jesus is currently in a position of authority (Mt. 28:18)

Jesus, Name Above All Names Heb. 1:1-4 The writer comes to his main talking point at the end of verse 4 Jesus is “so much better than the angels as he has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they” Angels are alluded to throughout this section no less than 10 times!

Jesus, Name Above All Names Emphasis on Angels 1:5 “For to which of the angels did He ever say:” 1:7 “And of the angels He says: Who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire” 1:13 “But to which of the angels has He ever said:” 1:14 “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” 2:2 “For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast” 2:5 “For he has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels” 2:7 “You have made him a little lower than the angels”

Jesus, Name Above All Names Today, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, JWs & Christian Scientists make Jesus less than what He is too! Emphasis on Angels 2:9 “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels” 2:16 “For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham” Why have angels as a talking point? Probably some believed Jesus was just an angel! The Hebrew writer says that is false doctrine!!! Cf. Mt. 22:41-46; Jn. 10:33

Jesus, Name Above All Names Heb. 1:5-6 These are references to the resurrection of Christ To be begotten is to be conceived and born! At conception a spirit is united with a body (Ps. 139) Therefore, in the resurrection Jesus was also begotten. His spirit was reunited with his body (Acts 13:29-33) Being the firstborn does not mean He is created! It means He is the first to have fully conquered the grave and has a position of preeminence Cf. Ex. 4:22; Rom. 8:29 Angels did not have a physical body like Jesus! So, these passages could not be used of Christ if He were an angel!!!

Jesus, Name Above All Names Heb. 1:7-14 The angels were created and subservient The Son is eternal and exalted Angels worship the Christ because they recognize Him as being totally different and far superior “Flames of fire” = powerful forces Ex. 12:29; 2 Kgs. 19:35 Whereas angels are more powerful than men, the power of the Son far surpasses them! The Son is the creator, sovereign, and immutable!

Jesus, Name Above All Names Heb. 2:1-4 The first century Christians were in danger of drifting This can happen to us too! If we fall away it will mean that we have turned our backs on what we know to be true! The first century Christians had seen the miracles of the apostles and had an opportunity to draw directly to God! We have evidences to rest our faith upon and God has blessed with a close relationship Mt. 11:11

Jesus, Name Above All Names Heb. 2:5-9 The world to come will be for the redeemed. It will not belong to angels. It was not created for angels but for us, the faithful 1 Cor. 3:21-23 Anyone who is in the flesh is “a little lower than the angels” nevertheless the world to come will show man in an exalted state. Even as man has dominion in this world (Gen. 1:26-28), man will have a measure of dominion in the world to come All will be subject to Christ (1 Cor. 15:26-29)

Jesus, Name Above All Names Heb. 2:5-9 What is man that you are mindful of him? The answer is that God sent His Son to die for man! Angels can’t die! Christ tasted death for everyone!!! Calvinism teaches that Jesus died only for the elect General Baptist churches

Jesus, Name Above All Names Heb. 2:10-18 Bringing many sons to glory Jesus became identified with humanity by taking a human body and subjecting himself to our struggles! He did this for a purpose. It was not just an “experiment” It was for our redemption. It was to demonstrate that man could and would conquer the grave! This illustrates why Christians should not fear death! Our captain shall lead us to victory! (1 Cor. 15) v. 10 Now he could identify with what we go through! V. All of one what? All of one flesh! Death is yours!

Jesus, Name Above All Names You are not ready to live until you are first ready to die! How can you be ready to die? Hear, Believe, Repent, Confess, Be Baptized Stay Faithful v. 10 Now he could identify with what we go through! V. All of one what? All of one flesh! Death is yours! Are You in the Kingdom? Acts 2:38,47
