BAD: Mathilde Loisel was upset because she thought she should have nice things. This is shown in the quote, “She grieved incessantly, feeling that she had been born for all the little niceties and luxuries of living” (221). GOOD: Mathilde Loisel was upset because “She grieved incessantly, feeling that she had been born for all the little niceties and luxuries of living” (221). Quote Blending

The sentence before the colon explains your point. What follows the colon is your support in the form of a quote. Montresor’s inspiration for killing Fortunato came in the form of an insult: “A thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (233). Quote Blending

Ellipsis Points (…) can be used to indicate that you have omitted some of the quoted materials. “Mme. Loisel appeared an old woman now…But, sometimes…she would sit near the window and think of that long-ago evening when…she had been so beautiful” (227). Quote Blending

A shocked Mme. Forestier gasped, “Oh, my poor Mathilde. But mine was fake” (228). Quote Blending

1. Always use quotation marks to indicate that the words you are using are not your own. 2. Capitalize the first word in the quotation if it begins your sentence. 3. Use an ellipsis (…) to indicate that a word or words have been left out. 4. Give credit for the quote using a parenthetical citation at the end of the sentence. Quote Paraphrasing Summarizing
