Summarizing Book Club Book with “SOMEBODY WANTED BUT SO THEN”

SOMEBODYWANTEDBUTSOTHEN This part states the setting. It introduces the main character, the SOMEBODY This section addresses the theme and plot. It states the main idea by describing what the SOMEBODY, the main character, WANTED. BUT states the problem or conflict that the main character has while trying to get what he or she WANTED. SO describes the three main events that happened in the story as the SOMEBODY tries to solve the conflict or problem. THEN tells how the problem is solved during the resolution or conclusion of the story. EXPOSITION This part of the plot gives background information about characters and setting. It sets the scene for the conflict, describing who, when, and where. RISING ACTION In this part of the story the plot becomes more complicated and the conflict is introduced. RISING ACTION continued through CLIMAX This is the turning point of the story. This is the highest point of interest. FALLING ACTION The author reveals the result of the conflict and tells what happened after the climax. RESOLUTION This gives the final outcome of the story and its final events or solution.

SOMEBODY (2) Example: Using Wonder Step 1: Plan your sentence to summarize your book club book Auggie, an 11 year old boy who was home schooled because he was born with a disfigurement, wanted to attend regular school, be treated just like the other students, and wanted to have friend. WANTED (3) BUT (4) SO (5) THEN (6) But he discovered at school that even though he did make a few friends, some pretended to be his friend. So Auggie proved he could be a leader in a tough situation and surprised many people, including himself. Then the other students realized that although Auggie looked different, he was just like them where it counted, on the inside.

Fold your paper into 6 boxes. In Box 1, put title of your book and author. In the other boxes, put another part of the sentence at the top of the box. Illustrate that section below it. Must be in color. Then the other students realized that although Auggie looked different, he was just like them where it counted, on the inside. So Auggie proved he could be a leader in a tough situation and surprised many people, including himself.
