Objectives: - to explore how two poems treat the themes of history/family ESSAY DUE TODAY!

To Begin: Considering ‘Inheritance’ Some context: The Married Women’s Property Act (1870) stated that all women entering marriage had to give up all rights to their personal property, which was all automatically transferred to their husband. So…aside from physical property, what else can be inherited? Try to think of 3 ideas… -Physical attributes -Talents -Personality traits -Knowledge -Religion/superstition -Values

Symbolism in Inheritance – what might the following represent? Isolation, Entrapment – rock and hard place, Nostalgia Fluidity = femininity, transience, isolation Luxury, security, prestige Vulnerability, protection

The Villanelle 19 lines long – (4x3 line stanzas, 1x4 line) Alternating rhymes at the end of each stanza and various repeating lines Circular in structure LOOK AT MORRISSEY’S POEM (P125). 1.Annotate the features of a Villanelle 2.After a first read, what ideas can you think about why she is using this form? 3.CHALLENGE: What makes this Villanelle atypical and why? Like Boland, another Irish-born author – is that significant?

The Villanelle LOOK AT MORRISSEY’S POEM (P125). 1.Annotate the features of a Villanelle 2.After a first read, what ideas can you think about why she is using this form? 3.CHALLENGE: What makes this Villanelle atypical and why? -To echo the oscillation between separation/togetherness that occurs in the poem? -To illustrate circularity – like a wedding ring - To show she is not exactly like her parents – elements have changed/transformed (‘palms’ ‘hands’ only half rhymes, end lines change slightly each time)

HOMEWORK Today we encountered the Villanelle. For homework, complete the worksheet RESEARCHING the features of other key poetic forms.
