Mental/ Emotional Health The ability to accept yourself and others Adapt to and manage emotions Deal with the demands and challenges you meet in life A mentally and emotionally healthy person can usually handle a wide variety of feelings and situations

Characteristics of Good Mental and Emotional Health Sense of Belonging Sense of Purpose Positive Outlook Self-Sufficiency Healthy Self-Esteem Feeling close to people provides you with support. Recognizing that you have value helps you set and reach goals. Seeing the bright side increases your chances of success. Being confident promotes your sense of independence. Having healthy self-esteem helps you recover from difficulties.

Maslow’s Hierarchy

Developing Self-Awareness Maslow’s hierarchy shows that once our basic physical and safety needs are met, we become interested in meeting these needs: The need to belong and be loved. The need to be valued and recognized. The need to reach our potential, to achieve self- actualization.

Self-Actualization Self-actualization – the striving to become the best you can be Having goals that motivate and inspire Willing to make necessary changes in life to reach those goals

Personality Personality – a complex set of characteristics that makes you unique – Includes an individual’s emotional makeup, attitudes, thoughts, and behaviors Influenced by heredity, and environment – Modeling – observing and learning from the behaviors of those around you

Personal Identity Personal Identity – your sense of yourself as a unique individual Developmental Assets – building blocks of development that help young people grow up as healthy, caring and responsible individuals
