 Paraphrasing :to understand rather than evaluate. A restatement of the sender’s message in our own words. Clear and simple language.   The 3 situations when paraphrasing is used:  a) When we are uncertain about the meaning of the sender’s feelings.  b) When we want the sender to hear and understand what he has just said.  c) When we let the speaker know we want to understand his message. 7

   Positive Feedback Positive feedback from superiors and colleagues or friends encourages the repetition of a particular behavior.    Negative Feedback Negative feedback does not necessarily produce bad results. It depends on the way the feedback is provided.    Self-evaluation Self-evaluation takes place when we assess our own work and communication with others. 8

 Feed forward refers to information sent before the actual message and has four functions. 9

Networking is the exchange of ideas and information with other people. Your network consists of relationships with different people.  What does networking mean?  1. Networking is the exchange of ideas and information with other people.  2. Self-disclosure leads to increased self- awareness and self-understanding. 10

 A person’s self-concept depends on his own feelings about himself. Disclosures on topics such as current affairs, movies or work are not as threatening as they do not involve exposure of the real self. Self-disclosure is usually gradual and there is a need to maintain a balance in self-disclosure. 11

 Jason, one of your best friends has been absent from school for a week. He was seen loitering at the basement of an unused building. You heard rumours that Jason was involved in some “gang” fights recently. Your personal mentor has also spoken to you about Jason on a number of occasions. You have decided to talk to Jason about this matter.  Present a 4-part “I” Message to express your concern as you speak to Jason.  Credible feelings + behavior + effect + acceptable alternative behaviour 12
