DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Living Things Characteristics of Organisms > Criteria

Criteria – The Big Ideas Scientists observe and record the features of living things. A microscope and magnifying glass are tools for studying very small things. Scientists classify living things using many features and some behaviors. Scientists often study the heredity of an organism to help classify it.

Criteria – Prior Knowledge Students will have knowledge of living things prior to this study. It will be helpful for students to use the Fun-damental, Being Alive. It will also help if they have:Being Alive Seen and named different types of living things. Classified animals by either kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, or species.

Criteria – Common Misconceptions Plants are not alive because they do not move. Reality: Plants, one of the five kingdoms of living things, possess a common trait of living things: movement. Some plants move close to the light. Some plants move to close their leaves when they are touched. Plants are alive.

Criteria – Instructional Ideas Read the passage, Making Observations.Making Observations –Give students small leaves or flowering plants. Ask them to observe them using a magnifying glass. –Students should record observations and draw pictures of what is seen in a science log. –Then, ask students to make observations looking at the same objects under a microscope. –Students should record observations and draw pictures of what is seen in a science log. –Share observations as a class. Compare observations between the two different tools to help students further understand the purpose of each tool.

Criteria – Instructional Ideas Watch the video segment, The Five Kingdoms.The Five Kingdoms –Provide groups of three with pictures of different living things. –Ask students in groups to classify the living things by kingdom: animals, plants, fungi, protists, and monerans. –Share classification as a class and discuss characteristics of living things in each kingdom.
