Look for examples of good design:  Keep copies of brochures, newsletters, flyers, or other publications that you think are well designed.

Determine the purpose of a publication’s message:  Consider the audience, the message you want to convey, the budget, and how the material will be distributed. These factors will determine the graphics you will need and the best software to use.

Sketch a few ideas on paper:  On paper, you can quickly experiment with different design ideas. Sketching your ideas helps you think creatively and saves time at the computer.

Use your sketches to create your ideas on the computer:  If budget and time frame permit, you can submit several ideas to a client or team.

Keep your design simple:  Remove any unnecessary elements and make sure nothing distracts from the intended message. Proofread, proofread, proofread!
