Castle Bromwich is at war Daisy Walters

Why did World War II start? World War II began on 1st of September 1939 and ended on 2nd September 1945. World War II was started by Adolf Hitler and Germany in an unprovoked attack on Poland. Britain and France declared war on Germany after Hitler had refused to stop his invasion of Poland. It is estimated that 50 million people lost a lives during World War II.

Castle Bromwich during the war In 1938 a new factory was built to produce aeroplanes for the war. This was called the Castle Bromwich Aircraft Factory. Today the factory is on the site of the Jaguar Plant. This factory made fighter planes known as Spitfires and parts for the Lancaster bombers. Nearly 12,000 people worked at the factory and a lot of them lived in Castle Bromwich. The factory produced 320 Spitfires per month, until production ended in 1945.

The Allies and The Axis Allies Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Greece, India, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America, Soviet Union (Russia), Yugoslavia and others. Axis Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Japan and Bulgaria.

Castle Bromwich Aerodrome When the Spitfires were built they were tested at Castle Bromwich Aerodrome by the pilots.

Here are some workers making parts for the aeroplanes.

Here are two workers fitting an engine into a Spitfire.

The Sentinel The Sentinel, which is locally known as Spitfire Island was built between 1997 and 2000. The sculptor is Tim Tolkien who is the great nephew of J. R. R. Tolkien the author of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

Remembrance Day Every year on Remembrance Day we remember the soldiers who died. People wear poppies and the money collected goes to the British Legion to support the soldiers and their families. In Castle Bromwich as well as other parts of the country, marches are held and poppy wreaths are laid. The country shares in two minutes silence to show their respect for the people who lost their lives during the wars.
