White Hill Middle School Special Education Program Education Specialist Model Plan for school year

Current Program Resource Specialist Program:  Individual pull out instruction based on IEP goals  2 FTE teachers, 2 FTE program aides Learning Center:  Accommodation of grade level curriculum in ELA and Math  2 periods .5 FTE teacher,.5 FTE aide Special Day Class:  Interdisciplinary units based on grade level achievement  Modification of curriculum,  4 periods, self-contained class  1 FTE teacher, 1 FTE program aide

Spectrum of Services General Ed General Ed with study skills support General Ed with push in support: collaborative model/teacher assistance General Ed with pull out support, targeted remediation Accommodation of grade level curriculum Modification of grade level curriculum

Education Specialist Program General Education:  Collaborative Aide support Learning Lab:  2 FTE teachers, 2 programs aides  Students grouped based on area of need  Study skill support  Targeted ELA, Math and writing remediation utilizing technology and researched based individualized programs Learning Center:  1.5 FTE teacher, 1.5 program aides  Accommodation of grade level curriculum  Modification of grade level curriculum  Individualized, small group instruction  Targeted ELA, Math and writing remediation utilizing technology and researched based individualized programs  Flexible number of periods depending on student needs

Effect of program changes Utilizes current staffing ratios (3.5 FTE teachers) Underscores the importance of Special Ed program aides in providing tiered interventions and support for students. Request that Board reconsider the Feb 12 preliminary decision to reduce Special Ed program aides. Infusion of research based, computer aided individualized remediation programs targeting weaknesses in ELA, Math and writing Access to Tier 3 interventions for general education students Full spectrum of services available to students Alignment of program to recommendations of the School Advocacy and Innovations Report, November, 2009.

Next Steps Continue to meet with White Hill staff to match program to student needs Identify research based, individualized remediation curriculum for use in both centers. Support use of curriculum with needed technology resources. Provide staff development focused on  Collaborative teaching strategies and support  Accommodation and modification of grade level curriculum.  Effective use of technology based remediation curriculum.
