Paragraph (2) Topic Sentence? Topic+Controlling Idea Subject of the paragraph Controls or limits the topic to a very specific point (s)

Paragraph (3) e.g: First-born children are often different from their siblings. First-born children are independent. First-born children are often expected to be a role model for their siblings.

Positions Beginning (common) Middle End Note Good topic sentence only gives a hint. Something about contents but NO details. Not too general or too specific. Paragraph (5)

Paragraph (6) Supporting Sentence? Also known as detail sentence. Explains the topic. Includes examplesgood support illustrates importance Order chronology

Paragraph (7) E.g: First-born children are independent. They are more likely to be hardworking and responsible. They are also reliable, and make good leaders. Therefore, it is no surprise that eldest children are usually more successful in their studies and careers compared to their younger brothers and sisters.

Paragraph (8) Concluding Sentence? -Reminds reader of the main idea. First-born children are independent. E.g: Eldest children are able to stand on their own feet indeed. This shows that eldest children are able to survive.

Remind or Summarize the reader of the main idea NOT copy Begin with a conclusion signal. (refer to page 47) Never end with a new idea! Paragraph (9)

Unity Paragraph discusses only 1 idea. Every sentence from the beginning to the end should relate to the topic.

Coherence (1) Flows smoothly from beginning to the end. One sentence leads naturally to the other. 3 ways: 1.Using Noun – Pronouns consistently (pg.79) plural singular

Coherence (2) 2.Transition Signals 3.Put ideas into logical division (pg.78) - pattern of organization - very structured

Descriptive Paragraph (1) 5 senses Word picture (imagination)

Descriptive Paragraph (2) Pattern of organizationSpatial Order arrangement of things in place e.g: Left to right, Right to left, Near to far, Far to near, Outside to inside, Inside to outside, top to bottom, or Bottom to top. Refer pg.61

Descriptive Paragraph (3) E.g: From the left side of the doorway, you can see a dressing table. From the top, the room looks like a pizza.

Descriptive Paragraph (4) Must include Spatial Order Signals E.g:at the top of In the center On the left In front of Refer pg.62
