WHAT ARE THE BILL OF RIGHTS?? Before many of the 13 states would ratify (approve) the Constitution, they believed there needed to be a protection of our basic human rights. The first ten amendments to the Constitution are known as the Bill of Rights and were added in 1791.

WHAT DO THE BILL OF RIGHTS PROTECT? AMENDMENT 1: protects freedom of speech, religion, petition, assembly and press TYPES OF SPEECH –Pure speech – speaking –Symbolic speech – using symbols and actions to get a point across (i.e. flag burning) UNPROTECTED SPEECH –Seditious speech – calling for the violent overthrow of the government –Fighting words – language so inflammatory that the only reaction to them is a violent one –Slander – lying about a person to damage their character –Speech that presents a clear and present danger

AMENDMENT SIX: guarantees the accused an attorney and a trial by a jury of his/her peers AMENDMENT SEVEN: guarantees a jury trial in civil cases AMENDMENT EIGHT: protects against cruel and unusual punishment and excessive bail and fines AMENDMENT NINE: people have more rights than what is stated in the Constitution AMENDMENT TEN: reinforces federalism
