Amos Fortune

Main Characters Amos Fortune : Amos is kidnapped from Africa and sent to be a slave in New England. (He is the main character throughout the book.) The Copeland’s: Amos’s first owners. They treated him very well and were very nice. They also taught him English. Ichabod Richardson: Amos’s second owner. He allowed Amos to gain his freedom after years of work.

Minor Characters The At-mun-shi tribe: The tribe Amos was with before he was sold Viollett: Amos’s wife at the end of the story and also a slave he freed Celyndia: Amos’s child that he bought Lydia: One of the slaves Amos freed and married but then she died and Amos moved on Lily: His first wife and the first one he freed Polly Amos’s dad

Plotline The setting is in Africa when he is a free king and then in Boston and New Hampshire when he is a slave The exposition is when Amos is kidnapped from his tribe Africa The rising action is when Amos is sold, then when he lives with the Copeland's (his owners) for one year. Then, because of money issues he gets sold again to another owner who promises him he will gain his freedom for years of work. The climax is when he pays Ichabod Richardson after years of work and gains his freedom. The falling action is after he is free he helps free other slaves like his wife Viollett. Then he buys a child who lives with them until they die. The resolution is when he retires with Viollett and dies in 1802.

Theme The theme is independence and patience and do something with your life. In this book Amos becomes a free man but, has to wait a long time for that to happen. Examples: When Amos says to someone “don’t worry I will come back.” That means be patient and wait for your freedom. Another example: When a man said to Amos “I will try to free you.” That is another example of being patient and waiting for your freedom Also Amos did something with his life after he was free

Summary The book “Amos Fortune” is about a man who is in Africa but then is kidnapped and sent to be a slave in New England. He does not know much English but his first owners (the Copeland) taught him English and treated him very well. But he had to leave because the Copeland’s did not have a lot of money anymore. He was sold to his new owner Ichabod Richardson who promised Amos his freedom for years of hard work. After he gained his freedom he bought other slaves and freed them. He ended up marrying a lady named Viollett and adopting (buying) a daughter. He still worked, but then retired, and in 1802 he and Viollett died.

GOOD BYE!!!
