Common mistakes What was done well Rewrites

Did not use spell check or grammar check. Fragments Plagiarism (copying directly from the article without giving credit to the source by introducing it and putting information in quotation marks “…”) Not giving specific examples from the text that support your argument. Lack of analysis (analysis answers the questions why and how)

Show clear understanding of the article Organization of ideas Topic sentences

I. Hook—introduce the topic, provide a quote and explain it—get the reader interested. II. Thesis statement—it should look something like this: I. Geography plays a major role in determining the economic prosperity of a country specifically when looking at its location and climate. II. A country’s geographic location—whether the country has access to water, the sea or navigable waterways, and the type of climate based on latitude—is responsible for whether its economy is rich or poor. III. It is okay if yours does not look exactly like these examples but you want to make sure you offer an argument and how your going to prove it. IV. Based on your thesis you may have anywhere from 2-4 body paragraphs.

I. Topic sentence—take one of your ideas you introduced in your thesis and make this the topic of your body paragraph II. Explain the connection between topic and economic prosperity. III. Provide text evidence that supports claim. Be sure to introduce your quote: According to the authors… OR in the article it states that… I. Provide ANALYSIS (This is how you connect this paragraph back to the thesis.) Why or how does this affect the economy? Ex. When discussing the prevalence of disease in tropical climates compared to temperate climates explain how disease can affect the economy—a weakened workforce, through sickness and death, decreases the amount of goods and services produced thus weakening the economy

This is where you wrap up your ideas. Simply put it is a restatement of your thesis and the arguments that you made. Do not introduce any new evidence here. To access this ppt: Prompt: Analyze the relationship between a country’s economic prosperity and its geography. (How does a country’s geography affect or determine whether it is rich or poor?)
