Welcome to Year One! General information for parents

Uniform Full details are in the prospectus Please ensure EVERY item has your child’s name in it- this helps us a great deal when looking for lost property and at PE time

PE PE day is Tuesday Your child needs an indoor kit: White t-shirt, navy shorts, black velcro or slip-on pumps Your child also needs for outdoors: plain dark leggings or track suit bottoms, velcro or slip- on trainers (any colour, as plain as possible) We will keep the kits in school and send them home for washing each holiday

Reading and library books Guided reading is on Mondays Books are changed on Mondays Please write a comment in your child’s record book when they have read with you Library books are changed on Mondays Lost books incur a £3 charge for replacement

Money and Letters Please send snack money (£1.50 per week) in a named envelope. We encourage the children to bring these into class themselves. Please check your child’s bag each day for letters, change, etc If you wish your child to have milk at snack time, you will need to order and pay for this online or by sending off a form. Please ask if you need further information.

Themes for the year Many of our subject areas are covered through cross-curricular themes. You will receive a summary of the content each time the theme changes, usually each half term. This year they are: What do I see when I look in the mirror? Who’s afraid of the dark? Magical Mystery tour X marks the spot Mayday!

Levels of achievement Most recent levels are the ones in your child’s last report. We track and update them each half term and will let you know how your child is progressing at Parents’ Evenings and in termly reports. Between reports and parents’ evenings please feel free to make an appointment to discuss your child’s progress. Our target is for an AVERAGE Year 1 child to achieve Level 1a in Numeracy, Reading and Writing by the END of the year. Some children will not meet this level and others will exceed it.

The Phonics Screening Check Takes place in June Children have forty words to read to me, some real and some ‘fake’ To meet the expected standard the child has to read around of the words correctly Further meetings will be arranged soon after October half term to explain the check in more detail and to provide resources for supporting your child in phonics
