matter Anything that has mass and takes up space is matter

atom The smallest particle of matter

nucleus The dense area in the center of an atom. Inside the nucleus of every atom are smaller particles called protons, electrons, and neutrons.

molecule A molecule is made up to two or more atoms joined together. Water is a molecule made of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.

How do you identify matter? We identify matter by its properties –How it tastes, looks, and feels –Its size, shape, and color

How do you measure matter? Mass- a measure of the amount of matter in an object Volume- how much space a sample of matter takes up. EX- a golf ball and a balloon…. –A golf ball has more mass because if you put it on a balance scale with a balloon, the golf ball side would tip more. But a BALLOON has more volume because it takes up more space.

What is the difference between Mass and Weight? Mass- A measure of how much matter an object has Weight- is a measure of how strongly gravity pulls on that matter. EX: if you were to travel to the moon your weight would change because the pull of gravity is weaker there than on Earth but, your mass would stay the same because you are still made up of the same amount of matter

volume The amount of space an object takes up Another word for volume is capacity

Density- Density is an object’s mass divided by volume –D= m/v Density refers to how closely packed molecules of matter are
