Why did Germans vote for Adolf Hitler? Understand how Hitler’s policies appealed to Germans and why different groups would support the Nazi Party

Why did Germans vote for Adolf Hitler? Promise 1: Hitler said that he would rip apart the hated Treaty of Versailles and take back land that belonged to Germany before the First World War. He would rebuild the army and make Germany strong again. Promise 2: Hitler said that he would crush the communist threat; many Germans feared the communists Promise 3: Hitler said that he would solve Germany’s terribly high unemployment rates and stop the chaos caused by hyper-inflation

Our success criteria:

Why did Germans vote for Adolf Hitler? The Treaty of Versailles Understand the terms of the Treaty of Versailles and why Germans resented it In 1919 representatives of the Great Powers met in Versailles, near Paris to decide on the terms of the peace treaty (agreement) which would decide on what happened to Germany after the war.

Why did Germans vote for Adolf Hitler? Your group are either: France Great Britain The USA Germany Read p.22 of the handout so you are aware what your country wants from the peace talks Work through the seven points on p.23 and agree and write down the terms of your own treaty on the paper you were given.

Georges Clemenceau I want Germany punished. They have invaded France twice in the last 50 years; they have occupied our land and burned our towns. We have suffered and the Germans have not! I want them to suffer as France has suffered. I demand that Germany face a peace that is just to France and leaves Germany too weak to ever threaten us again. Clemenceau

Lloyd George David Lloyd George When I was elected, I told the British public I would squeeze Germany “until the pips squeak”, but Britain needs trade to recover from the war. The Germans must be punished, but not so much that we can’t trade with them. And what about the Bolshevik threat? If we make the Germans too poor, they could be attracted towards Bolshevism. We don’t want a revolution in Germany. There needs to be a balance for peace to work.

Wilson Woodrow Wilson Certainly, Germany needs to be punished, but the victors need to look at the issue of how to avoid war. There should be self-determination – the people of Europe, and indeed the World, should be allowed to rule themselves rather than being the subjects of great empires. And there can be no more ‘old alliances’ – there needs to be a League of Nations to solve international disputes. This will be my legacy.

Why did Germans vote for Adolf Hitler? The Treaty of Versailles Understand the terms of the Treaty of Versailles and why Germans resented it Now read the real terms of the Treaty and discuss and agree answers to the following: 1.Which countries seemed to get more of what they wanted in the terms of the treaty and which did not? 2.Which three terms of the treaty would most anger the people of Germany? 3.How might Hitler use the Treaty of Versailles to make him popular in Germany?

Why did Germans vote for Adolf Hitler? The German Economic Crisis Understand the nature of the economic crisis facing Germany in the early 1930s In 1929 the stock market collapsed in the USA and the Americans stopped buying goods from around the world and lending money to other countries. This caused economic chaos around the world. Unemployment rose sharply in Germany, 5 million Germans were unemployed. A shortage of money to pay wages and repay the debts owed to France agreed in the Treaty of Versailles caused the government to print more and more money. This caused hyper- inflation, which made bank notes almost worthless.
