2.3.1: Humanitarian leadership Learning objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to: Describe key leadership qualities of a humanitarian leader Identify their own leadership strengths Explain the importance of these leadership qualities in resolving humanitarian dilemmas

Definition of Humanitarian Leadership behaviours (Core Humanitarian Competency Framework) Seeing the overall goal within the changing context and taking responsibility to motivate others to work towards it, independent of one’s own role, function and responsibility

Strategic leadership skills that relate to the bigger picture Relational and communication qualities, including the ability to listen Decision-making and risk-taking skills Management and organisational skills Personal qualities including being principled, acting with integrity, being self-aware, having an inner self- confidence, humility, energy and enthusiasm A good leader recognises where their gaps are and calls on others to fill those gaps Leadership qualities
