Research  Contracted evaluation-Vermont DOC  Qualitative evaluation  How CoSA relationships work  Fulbright Award-NZ  Restorative justice in reentry practice  CoSA pilot

Comparing Context Infrastructure & Conditions Community Justice/DOC treatment  Volunteer recruitment Supervised Released  Preventive Detention (NZ)  Furlough (VT)

Models Corrections Reentry programs NGOs ?

Organizational Context  Core members  High risk  Role of DOC  Parole Board Core member VolunteersDOCCoordinator

Community Context Community Involvement  Distance from DOC  Faith-based  Supervised release Community Roles gradual reentry

Similarities  Balance between support/accountability “The relationship is always to empower. It’s not an intimate relationship, if you want to use that word. We have a loving, accepting relationship, but also a disciplined relationship.”  Help with deinstitutionalization “I’d say accommodation [housing], especially for child sex offenders, employment…and for a lot of long servers, I’d say lack of support, either from their family or the community in general. There’s lack of ties within the community, which really can make them anxious before their release and can make them feel quite isolated once they are released.”  Unpaid volunteers “…these people genuinely care. They’re not there to make themselves look important. They’re not there to get accolades...They’re there because they genuinely want to help people like me. And not many people want to help sex offenders. You’re probably well aware of. “

Significance  Distinct challenges with each model  Community-based organization solves problems  VT targets risk level rather than offense type  Isolation should be the target
