Battle of Gonzales 1st battle of Rev. Fought over a cannon; Flag The Texans won

Battle of Goliad October 9, 1835 Texan’s force small Mexican army to retreat. “On to San Antonio” Stephen Austin leads 400 Texans to remove the rest of the Mexican forces from Texas. Troops named “Army of the People”

Siege of San Antonio Texans lay siege on San Antonio for over a month Grass Fight during siege. Mules thought to be carrying silver only have grass. During the siege the Consultation meets. Siege ends December 4 1835.

Consultation San Felipe - November 3 1835 58 delegates War Party wants to fights for Immediate Independence Peace Party wants to fights for Constitution of 1824 November 6 – vote for “Declaration of the people of Texas in general convention assembled.” Vote to fight for Fighting for statehood and Constitution of 1824 Oppose dictator rule of Santa Anna

Provisional Government State Government Governor – Henry Smith Lt. Governor – James Robinson One representative from each municipality make up a council. Sam Houston named commander of regular army. Stephen Austin sent to U.S. to get help.

Battle of San Antonio Ben Milam – famous quote “Who will go with old Ben Milam into San Antonio.” 300 volunteers went into S.A. in two groups Milam and Frank Johnson leaders of the two groups. Battle lasted from December 5th to December 9th 1835 Milam Dies on 3rd day. Mexican General Cos surrenders. Texan’s think the war is over and go home.

Alamo Santa Anna & 4,000 to 6,000 troops arrive in S.A. Feb. 23, 1836. Texans retreat to Alamo fortress. Texas Leaders William Travis, James Bowie, Davy Crockett. Scouts James Bonham & Juan Seguin For 13 days the Mexicans bombard the fort; on March 6, 1836 final attack occurs before dawn. 180+ Texans died at the Alamo. Travis’ famous quote “Victory or Death”

Alamo Survivors Louis Moses Rose –left Alamo night before final attack. Juan Seguin TX scout never returned from trying to finding help. Susannah Dickinson and her daughter told to warn Texan’s what would happen if TX went up against Santa Anna - Death penalty Joe Travis – William Travis slave

TXs also write Republic of Texas Constitution – similar to US Ad Interim Gov’t created President David Burnet Vice President Lorenzo de Zavala Commander in chief of army Sam Houston TX Gov’t part of the Runaway Scrape

Runaway Scrape Starts with Houston retreating from Gonzales on March 13, 1836. Town is burned after settlers leave. Houston sends scouts all over Texas to tell the people to flee. Settlers head to the Sabine River to get away from the MX army.

Massacre of Goliad MX General Urrea captures Texan’s as he marches up the coast of TX. They are put in prison at La Bahia presidio in Goliad. Urrea ask to keep them as prisoners till war is over. Santa Anna orders their execution. March 27, 1836 (Palm Sunday) 350 TX massacred TX commander Fannin shot last.

Battle of San Jacinto April 21, 1836 18 minute battle TX wins independence Battle Cries “Remember the Alamo & “Remember Goliad” Capture Santa Anna April 22,1836 Sam Houston wounded in the ankle. TX want Santa Anna killed Houston keeps him alive to help convince MX we are independent.

Treaties of Velasco Two treaties written – one public and one secret Both signed May 14, 1836 in Velasco Public Santa Anna promised not to fight against TX again He ordered all MX troops out of TX. Exchange of prisoners captured during war. Property taken by MX be returned Secret Santa Anna promised to work to get MX to recognize TX independence
