Mrs. Miller’s 4 th Grade Class Welcome, students!

Welcome to Fourth Grade!  I will introduce you to fourth grade and to our classroom.  If you have any questions, please raise your hand and wait to be called on.

All About Me  I live in Newton with my husband, Matt, and my son, Caleb.  I went to Appalachian State… and still do!  I have been teaching since January 1999 in this room and in this grade!

Our Student Teacher, Ms. Hansley  I’m a current student at Appalachian State University…GO MOUNTAINEERS!!  I’ve been a teacher’s assistant for 5 years at Lyle Creek Elementary.  I know Charlie Moody and Sydney Travis from church.  I live in Newton along with most of my family.  I have 2 nephews and 2 nieces, but no children of my own.  I will graduate in December. (I will also celebrate another birthday the same month.)  I’m excited to be at Startown!!

What should I do in the morning?  Unpack EVERYTHING you will need from your book bag today.  Sharpen several pencils, turn in any finished library books, and use restroom with the pass if needed.  Do all morning work assignments.  If you have reading 1 st period get EVERYTHING you need stacked up. If not, take out math homework and fact practice.

Returning Forms This Week Only  After unpacking, take out any of your returned forms  Take these to the big table on the tile  Place your completed form in the right folder and the check off your name

Teacher’s Assistant  We will go through the class list in ABC order so everybody gets at least 1 turn  This week it’s Tommy  The assistant does everything I need  Runs errands  Washes tables at lunch (pick helper for week on Monday, don’t change helpers)  Takes names if teachers ask  Doesn’t take library books back, we’ll pick these helpers

Using the Restroom  Before the Tardy bell rings- You don't need to ask, place the appropriate pass on your desk and go quickly.  During work time- Most likely you may go, just ask a teacher first.  During class time- Interrupt to ask ONLY if it is a true emergency.

Punch Cards Reason for Punches  Shouting out  Talking at inappropriate times  Drawing or being off-task during learning time  Leaving your seat during teaching time without permission  Not being prepared for class (with homework, pencil, paper, and other materials)  Asking to do a job instead of waiting for the teacher to ask you  Showing disrespect to someone or to their property  Any behavior that disrupts learning **Stealing and fighting are automatic office referrals in this classroom.**

Punch Card Consequences Weekly Consequences  Punch 1: Warning  Punches 2 and 3: Lunch Detention (incomplete work will be taken to the cafeteria), 5 Laps at Recess, or any punishment that fits the crime.  Punch 4: Note or Phone call to parents  Punch 5: Office Referral

Punch Card Reward  Any student who has a “punch-free” card at the end of the week will have “Fun Friday”  Extra recess or game time

No Name Papers  No Names will be taped to the back board  If you see your name on a post-it on a paper, that means we don’t have a grade for you  If your paper is up without a name, put your name on it and TURN IT BACK IN!!

Who Will Teach What? Mrs. Miller/Ms. Hansley  Math  Language Arts  Social Studies Mrs. Farris  Reading  Science

Our Daily Schedule (For now, things are always changing!)  7:45-8:15 Morning Work, Attendance, House Keeping  8:15-9:30 1 st Period  9:30- 10:15 Language Arts (snack included in this time)  10:15-10:40 Recess  10:45-11:25 Social Studies/Science  11:31 Lunch  12:00-12:20 Read aloud  12:20-1:05 Block (PE, Music, PE, Dance)  1:10-2:15 2 nd Period  2:15-2:45 Star time, pack-up

AR Tests  AR isn’t given in this room, but you may take tests in here  In the morning AFTER morning work and getting packed up and ready for 1 st period  Never close anything on the screen, minimize or ask for help first!

Pencil Borrow  If you lose your pencil  Ask a friend to borrow one  Look in the floor pencil cup  Put your shoe up front and borrow one of mine

Fire Drill  We get out quick, no standing around trying to be last!!  Line up and step out to the corner  Jump in right behind Mrs. Farris’s class  Follow her class out and turn around  Stay silent!

Tardy or Absent  Tardy  Put your tardy slip on my computer desk  Absent  Put your note on my computer desk  Ask a classmate to see their agenda to copy missed homework  If you can’t find a paper on your desk, check the extra papers tray

If the Teachers Leave the Room  The “Phoney” will answer the phone only!  No walking, no talking, no class disturbance!  The name taker is not the teacher!

Name Takers  Usually the Teacher’s Assistant, unless he/she is not a good name taker  No talking to name taker!  No getting up to go to name taker  No telling on others  Name taker takes on the names of people he/she SEES disturbing the class!

Snack and Water Bottles  Water in water bottles only, no juice or drinks  We’ll have snack in homeroom around 9:30, so you can leave snacks in cubbies or desks during 1 st period  No candy for snack! Try to have a healthy snack

Let’s Have a Great Year!
