Evolution Notes: Misc. Information

Important Terms ► Punctuated Equilibrium - speciation happens in quick, rapid bursts, followed by periods of genetic equilibrium in between ► Spontaneous Generation – idea that life can arise from nonliving material ► Biogenesis – idea that life can arise only from living material

Important Terms ► Convergent Evolution – type of evolution where different species who live in the same environment start to evolve similar traits ► Divergent Evolution – type of evolution where the same species become separated and evolve different traits due to different environments

Earth History ► Scientists believe that the continents of today once formed a super continent called PANGAEA ► Rocks found on earth have been dated to be 4.6 billion years old ► Paleontologists use fossils to study early life ► Scientists think the earliest life forms were formed through spontaneous generation

Exam on Friday!!!!! -Darwin -Processes -Selection Types -Misc. Information

Misc. Information 5 Questions 1. Explain the difference between Spontaneous Generation and Biogenesis. 2. Explain the difference between Convergent and Divergent Evolution. 3. How old is the Earth? 4. What was the name of the super continent on Earth? 5. Scientists believe life forms were formed by _________ ____________.
