Solving and Graphing Inequalities By CaSandra Cowan SMS Math 6-3
What are inequalities? An inequality is a statement that two quantities are not equal. For example: 7 > 4 9 < 5 6 15
How do you solve inequalities? Solving inequalities is simple. You follow the same steps for solving EQUATION;)…with one difference. Instead of an equal sign, you will use the symbol that appears in the inequality.
FOR EXAMPLE: 5 + a < 35 *Subtract 5 from both sides 5 + a < a < 30
Solve the following inequality. B – 32 5 *add 32 to both sides B – 32 B 37
7f + 2 16 N / 2 < 14 9p > 36 Try the following inequalities on your own!
You should have the following answers: F 2 N < 28 P > 4
How do you graph inequalities? Graphing an equality that has sign, use an OPEN DOT at the number or answer. Graphing an inequality that has or sign, use a CLOSED DOT at the number or answer.
What does THAT mean??? For example, one of your answers on the previous problems was F 2. You would graph the answer like this: Closed dot because of the sign ( ) and F is greater than or equal to 2!
Here’s another one! N / 2 < 14 For N < OPEN DOT because of the sign ( < ) and N is less than 28!
Are you ready to solve and graph some inequalities on your own? HERE WE GO! Don’t worry you’ll do GREAT!
