History of Fashion in Nazi Germany, 1930’s Before the 1930’s, fashion reflected the party atmosphere of the roaring twenties and the Weimar Republic. Outfits were flamboyant and dressy. Then, in the 1930’s, fashion became a little more conservative. Ladies wore more practical clothes during the day and saved fancier outfits for the night. Still, form- fitting and draped feminine garments were popular. Soon, though, WWII started and influenced the whole design of fashion. Outfits became more boxy and shoulder pads were added to create a military-like style. Women wore very manly clothing that closely resembled uniforms.

Men’s Fashion

World War II Fashion and Poverty In the 1930’s, the United States was suffering from the Great Depression. At the same time, Germany was experiencing economic difficulties of its own after losing WWI. Hitler was able to rise to power because he promised to bring Germany out of its economic pit and restore the country’s pride. This influenced the fashion industry because designers began to use newer, cheaper fabrics that buys could actually afford. For example, Cotton and Rayon were used to mimic more expensive fabrics like silk.

Inventions and Creations! Technology of the 1930’s FM Radio is invented by Edwin Armstrong the same year Hitler wins elections-the radio was important because it was like their T.V.; they could listen to music, be informed about current news and even listen to comedy shows Television is created by Philo Farnsworth. Radar is invented (with contributions from many sources) which came to great use in WWII when they used it to detect enemy planes before they attacked. It was also used to easily track storms Nylon is invented by Wallace Carothers. Invention of the ballpoint pen by George and Ladislo Biro`. The parking meter is patented by Carl Magee. It was first invented in City workers always took up all the parking space around important buildings in big cities, so parking meters were invented so that there was a time limit on parking space. This allowed customers to park closer to wherever they were going First helicopter flown by Heinrich Focke Hitler begins Kristallnacht on Jews and thousands of Jewish shops are raided by Nazis First commercial helicopter sold. Pesticide DDT is created to protect farmers’ crops from insects. First flight by a jet airplane in Germany.

A Major Form of Transportation On May 28, 1937, during Adolf Hitler’s rule, one of the biggest names in German transportation was founded. Translated to "The People's Car Company,“ Volkswagen influenced transportation everywhere! It was founded by a Nazi Organization called the German Labor Front. The creation of Volkswagen was part of Hitler’s major project to create a popular car company that sold vehicles at affordable prices. He also built a large network of autobahns (highways). FUN FACT Volkswagen cars sold for about $140 at the time! Production of cars was quickly stopped when WWII began. Unfortunately, after the war ended, the factory was nothing but rubble. Attention of the allies was soon set on fixing and rebuilding the successful production of Volkswagen vehicles.
