Informal TC4 – Paper Status A. M. Thompson A. M. Luzik S. K. Miller A. Bryan - with M. A. Avery, G. A. Morris B. F. Taubman, J. E. Yorks, H. Voemel

What/Where/Why is TC4? Last ~ July 15 – Aug 15, 2007 See Tropical Composition, Cloud, Climate Coupling = TC4 Composition – aerosols, trace gases; clouds – convection, cirrus formation in upper troposphere + TTL Three aircraft operating from Costa Rica –ER-2 ~ 20 km –WB-57 ~15 km –DC-8 – 1 to 12 km

Sondes & NATIVE in TC4 - Panamá (7.8N, 80N) Most of TC4 at San Jose, CR All results at html

Paper – Theme/Goals “Convective and wave signatures in ozone profiles over the Panama Bight in July-August 2007 (TC4 Campaign)” *or* “Dynamical influences on ozone profiles in the equatorial Americas: Views from TC4 and SHADOZ” Part One – Panama Profiles contrast Alajuela (SHADOZ site) –Apply Budgets to Free trop and “TTL” to 20 km –Compare mean ozone/RH/temp profiles & Wave type fractions –Add comparisons with 2007 budgets –Add San Cristobal, Paramaribo perspectives – 1999 to 2007 Part Two – Tropospheric ozone summaries at LT, CR Part Three – Convective case Studies & Aircraft comparisons – Alex B

WAVE BUDGETS – Upper – Ozone Amplitude; Lower – Frequency. Solid – RW; Dashed – GW. Will replot composites Higher GW % typical closer to equator CR = 10N, LT/Pan = 8N, San Cr = 1S

Eight Days’ Coordinated Launches Las Tablas (Panama) – 19 profiles

Compare 2005, 2006 when CR became SHADOZ site. Left – Absolute ozone amounts in DU. Right - Fractions

Paramaribo – highest ozone amount San Cristobal – lowest, esp in 2006 Working on analysis - ?? El Nino effect in 2006

FIG 5. TC4 Time-Series Curtains note!! Scales not same: Panamá (Left); Costa Rica (Right) Ozone shape suggests cloud outflow at 8-10 km (similar to DC-8 FASTOZ) Panama mid-free troposphere – higher ozone, moister. More convection?? (note! Not same radiosonde type)

Free Tropospheric ozone segments in Dobson Units (DU) with laminae labeled RW or GW according to Grant et al. [1998]; Loucks [2007]; Thompson et al. [2008]. From sondes over (a) Las Tablas; (b) Costa Rica. Check anomalously high ozone over CR

Summary to Date Las Tablas – unique. More ozone than CR to 20 km and in troposphere. Comparisons: – More GW at LT than CR in – LT closer to CR in 2005, 2006, higher GW over San Cris as expected from SHADOZ wave studies –2006 over San Cris may be lower ozone due to ENSO enhanced convection More tropospheric O3 over LT than CR, San Cris Next – compare interannual variability of ozone amounts, wave index to ENSO, OLR, IOD. Case studies/aircraft, surface comparison. To Alex!
