THE HISTORY OF BALLET BY:HADLEY
WHERE IT ORIGINATED Ballet began during the Renaissance around the year 1500 in Italy. The word “ballet” and “ball” as in masked ball come from the Italian ballare, to dance.
HOW IT STARTED TO SPREAD When Catherine de Medici of Italy married King Henry II, she brought early dance styles into the court life in France. Ballet kept spreading and spreading, but to get to the U.S. it would have to take awhile. Ballet finally got to the U.S. in the 1930s!
COSTUMING:NOW AND THEN At first, dancer wore masks, layers, and brocaded costuming. The ladies wore large headdresses and the ornament print. The clothing was beautiful but difficult to move in. Today, dancers wear tutus, and flowing dresses with pink tights.
BALLET SHOES: NOW AND THEN Dance shoes had small heels, like formal dress shoes rather than like the shoes we have today. In these days now we have 2 main types. They are called pointe shoes and ballet flats.
DANCE STEPS Dance steps included small hops, slides, curtsies, promenades, and gentle turns. Today some dance steps are a plié, a pirouette, and so many more!
