DON’T PANIC

Mesa County Public Library District Evacuation Procedures These are general instructions and procedures. Every situation is different. Use common sense.

Basic Procedure In the event of a fire, security will proceed to the call center to make contact with Central Security.

Call Center

Evacuation Coordinator The evacuation coordinator will be the staff person working at the upper information desk. –Stay at this location. Their job is assign and delegate various tasks. Staff from different departments report to them with information and updates. Staff reports to them after an area has been cleared. They will report this information to Security.

Important If you do not feel comfortable with this responsibility you can ask someone else to take your place.

Lower Level Staff person at the PC Desk will be the lower level coordinator. They check the Literacy offices, computer lab, staff computers, bookstore, bathrooms, break room, etc… They will then report to the evacuation coordinator at the Upper Information Desk.

Important Tasks Someone needs to open the back door (staff entrance) and put the door stop down. This person must wait outside in the general area to ensure no one enters the building.

Important Tasks Make sure the library is clear. Do a walk around if possible. Check the bathrooms. Direct patrons out of the building. The meeting area is straight out the front doors by 5 th street.

Important Tasks Bring the elevator to the top floor. Turn off the elevator.

Important Tasks Make sure someone from each department can account for all staff on the clock. Make sure a staff person is by the front entrance so that no one enters the building.

Important Tasks Someone needs to notify the Library Director. Someone needs to notify the Administration Building and the Rio Grande.

Rio Grande Designate an evacuation coordinator. Call 911 if needed. –The panic alarm is in-house only. Follow the same general procedures as the main building (check bathrooms, offices etc…). Check the lower level. Meet outside in the parking lot towards 5 th street.

Administration Designate an evacuation coordinator. Call 911 if needed. –The panic alarm is in-house only. Follow the same general procedures as the main building (check bathrooms, offices etc…). Check the lower level. Meet outside in the parking lot towards 6 th street.

Branches The same general procedures apply. Remember that the panic alarm only notifies the police. Call 911 for fires or other emergencies.

In General Do not open hot doors. We have fire extinguishers that you are allowed to use. The lower level in the Central branch has a sprinkler system. The Fire Department will take about 5 – 10 minutes to get to the library.
