PowerPoint 2012 Tips for Creating a Presentation

The Opening Screen

View Buttons 4 View Buttons Normal View – allows access to Slide View, the Outline Tab and Notes Pane Slide Sorter View – displays all slidesslides – you can rearrange slides easily in this view – you can also add transitions or animations Reading View – use to display the presentation for an individual at a personal computer – displays the presentation title and task bar Slide Show View – use to present to an audience on a large screen from a projector

How to Add a Slide To add a new slide to a presentation 1.Look for the HOME Tab 2.Find the New Slide button - (it has a star on it) 3.Click on the down arrow on the button 4.Select the slide you want

Slides & Slide Layout A presentation consists of several Slides Placeholders are the boxes with dotted borders on each slide where you enter text or graphics You have several choices for Slide Layout The best presentations will use at least 10 slides to get the message across

Inserting Graphics To insert saved pictures use the Insert Picture from File icon To insert Clip Art use the Clip Art icon (type in a word to search for) To insert a graphic from the web access the internet from the Clip Art task pane

Bullets & Numbering Bullets & Numbering allow you to organize text in lists – Bullets : use for unordered lists; sequence is not important – Numbering : use for lists that need to be in a certain order; outline steps or a time line Increase/Decrease Buttons – Increase: increase list level – Decrease: decreases list levels

Animations & Transitions Animations – special effects that can be applied to text & graphics – located on the Animations Tab Transitions – how slides appear on the screen – located on the Transitions Tab – also where you locate sound to add to a slide or presentation

Backgrounds & Themes PowerPoint has many predesigned graphic styles that can be added to your slides Find the Design Tab Here you can choose your Design Template or Theme You can also change your Background color, Font or Font Effects

Proofreading & Editing Always check your work for errors/mistakes! READ everything 2 times! Use the Check Spelling feature. [click on the Review Tab to find the Spelling icon]

Just because you can— don’t ! – avoid unnecessary or distracting sounds, images & animations 7 x 7 Rule— – no more than 7 bullets on a slide – no more than 7 words per bullet Text— choose an easy to read font; 32 points is the standard Media— – resize pictures & images from the corners; use the circles & squares– handles – avoid annoying sounds; choose animated clipart wisely Animations & Transitions— control what the audience sees – Animations: effects that can be applied to text and graphics – Transitions: how slides appear on the screen Color – avoid using colors that clash; use the color schemes & templates available in the program – Be sure your background & text contrast so your message is easy to see PowerPoint Rules to Remember
