 Can facial expressions tell if someone is lying or not?

 The purpose of my investigation is to determined if watching facial expressions can tell if someone is lying or not. This is important to know because you can tell if you could trust someone.

 I hypothesize that facial expressions can help tell if someone is lying or not. I believe this because someone could be smiling when your telling them something when they lie.

 Paper  Pencil

 Manipulated: True or false statement  Responding: Facial expressions used to tell if someone is lying or not  Constant: Number of questions asked and directions given to test subjects

1. Walk up to a person and ask them to think of two statements about themselves. One should be true and the other should be false. 2. Ask the person to say one of the sentences out loud. Record whether you think the statement was true or false using facial expressions to decide. 3. Repeat step 2 for the second statement. 4. Ask person to tell you which statement was true and false. 5. Repeat steps 1-4 four more times using a different person each. 6. Repeat steps 1-5 for four more trials. 7. Calculate the number of correct and incorrect guesses.

PERCENTAGE OF CORRECTLY IDENTIFIED STATEMENTS BASED ON FACIAL EXPRESSIONS TRIAL 1TRIAL 2TRIAL 3TRIAL 4TRIAL 5AVERAGE SUCCESSFULLY IDENTIFIED STATEMENTS UNSUCCESSFULLY IDENTIFIED STATEMENTS

My hypothesis was correct. Facial expressions can tell if someone lying. The percentage of identified statements based on facial expressions is 64% correct and 36% incorrect. When someone is NOT telling the truth they can be smiling nervously.
