Refresher: Diploma Requirements (O.S.S.D.) for the 4 year program School Secondary Ontario 18 Compulsory Credits 12 Optional Credits Successful completion of Ontario School Literacy Test 40 hours of Community Involvement

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) Usually March of your Grade 10 year Based on reading and writing expectations up to and including grade 9 Some students may be given accommodations, deferrals, and exemptions Getting Ready? An after school prep-course is often offered to assist students

Community Involvement Completing 40 hours of community involvement is a diploma requirement Encourages civic responsibility, promotes community values, and reinforces importance of volunteerism Students are responsible for keeping records of their activities Recommended that students finish their hours by the end of Grade 10 REMEMBER Cannot be completed for a BUSINESS!!!!

Group One Additional English—Media Studies, Presentation Skills, Writer’s Craft Third Language (Spanish, Cantonese, Tamil etc.) French as a second language Social Science and Humanities—any Family Studies course or Philosophy or Social Justice Canadian and World Studies—History (Ancient Civ., History vs Hollywood), Geography, (Travel and Tourism etc) Economics, Law, Politics Guidance and Career Education—Surviving in Today’s World (NEW!) Cooperative Education

Group Two Physical Education--Fitness or Sports Activities, Volleyball, Leadership, Intro to Kinesiology Arts--Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Art, Media Arts, Music Theatre Business Studies--any grade or level French as second language Cooperative Education

Group Three 3rd science Environmental, Biology, Chemistry, Physics (any level) Technological Education–any course Computer Studies (ICS2O, 3U or 4U) French as second language Cooperative Education

COURSE PATHWAY TYPES in Grades 9 and 10 APPLIED ACADEMIC LOCALLY DEVELOPED OPEN Many students “mix and match” to create their own unique pathway based on interests, skills and abilities

Pathway Courses Applied (P) Academic (D) a real life hands approach with some theory smaller class size (22) students are given more time to learn new concepts and practice in class Academic (D) theoretical in approach, utilizes abstract thinking larger class sizes (28) students are expected to work more independently in class and complete homework nightly Recommended minimum grade in the Grade 9 Academic Course is 70%

Pathway Courses Open (O) Locally Developed (L) an opportunity to explore an area of interest for all students Examples Family Studies Technology Physical Education Arts Business Special Education Locally Developed (L) courses intended for students whose educational needs are not met by the provincial courses English, Mathematics and Science

What levels should I take in Grade 10?

English and Science You can select either the applied or academic Grade 10 courses Important to have a SOLID FOUNDATION of skills to move to the next step successfully Choose carefully using grade 9 marks as part of the decision making (usually Level 3) Teacher recommendation is very important Speak with a counsellor to consider different combinations and pathways

English and Science Grade 10 Applied Grade 10 Academic Changing from applied to academic level? Please speak with your science or English teacher and guidance counsellor.

Mathematics Follow the recommendation of math teacher Think about the reason for your math pathway Need to look at Math Pathway chart Maybe follow a different pathway to get to end goal in math for grade 11 and 12

Print your course selection request Sign your sheet Hand in your Course Request to your homeroom teacher by February 16th Career Cruising has been known to crash the day before course selection is due. COMPLETE YOUR SELECTION IN ADVANCE.

Choosing Courses Take 8 courses in Grade 10 Students who choose Music will have 9 courses when repertoire is added You may choose a combination of academic, applied, locally developed and open courses Be sure to choose alternate courses that you like

About Timetables and Class Sizes… Number of classes in the timetable are based on the number of students who select the course in February All classes have maximum numbers very little flexibility to move between Academic and Applied courses once the timetable has been built Use course verification cycle if you need to make a change (April)

Summer School Designed for students who have failed a course in Grade 9 Students may be required to complete a 2 week course in July OR there may be a recommendation that you repeat the whole course Other courses taken at summer school must be pre- approved by the Guidance Department and the Principal Registration will begin in April/May – listen for announcements

Next Steps… Tuesday, February 16th, 2016 Do your research! Complete pre-course selection planning activities Use the Course Information time on Tuesday, Feb 9th Complete your course selection and submit electronically Print your selection and get signed by parent/guardian Return your signed printout to your homeroom teacher by: Tuesday, February 16th, 2016

Course Verification Check your courses in April when the Course Verification Form is given out This should be last chance to change elective courses Levels can be changed based on semester two results

Course changes requests in September will only be considered for sound educational reasons Select courses that are appropriate to your ability and that you are interested in exploring further Select alternatives knowing that you might get the course
