Community Involvement Completing 40 hours of community involvement is a diploma requirement Encourages civic responsibility, promotes community values, and reinforces importance of volunteerism Students are responsible for keeping records of their activities Recommended that students finish their hours by the end of Grade 10 REMEMBER Cannot be completed for a BUSINESS!!!!

COURSE PATHWAY TYPES in Grades 9 and 10 APPLIED ACADEMIC LOCALLY DEVELOPED OPEN Many students “mix and match” to create their own unique pathway based on interests, skills and abilities

Pathway Courses Applied (P) Academic (D) a real life hands approach with some theory smaller class size (22) students are given more time to learn new concepts and practice in class Academic (D) theoretical in approach, utilizes abstract thinking larger class sizes (28) students are expected to work more independently in class and complete homework nightly Recommended minimum grade in the Grade 9 Academic Course is 70%

What levels should I take in Grade 10?

English and Science You can select either the applied or academic Grade 10 courses Important to have a SOLID FOUNDATION of skills to move to the next step successfully Choose carefully using grade 9 marks as part of the decision making (usually Level 3) Teacher recommendation is very important Speak with a counsellor to consider different combinations and pathways

Choosing Courses Take 8 courses in Grade 10 Students who choose Music will have 9 courses when repertoire is added You may choose a combination of academic, applied, locally developed and open courses Be sure to choose alternate courses that you like

About Timetables and Class Sizes… Number of classes in the timetable are based on the number of students who select the course in February All classes have maximum numbers very little flexibility to move between Academic and Applied courses once the timetable has been built Use course verification cycle if you need to make a change (April)

Summer School Designed for students who have failed a course in Grade 9 Students may be required to complete a 2 week course in July OR there may be a recommendation that you repeat the whole course Other courses taken at summer school must be pre- approved by the Guidance Department and the Principal Registration will begin in April/May – listen for announcements
