Recycling

What is Recycling Recycling involves processing used materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from land filling) by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production

Process of Recycling The recycling process involves three stages. In the first stage the old products are collected and processed, where they are sorted, cleaned and made ready for recycling or manufacturing new products. The second stage involves the manufacturing of new products from the raw material obtained by the processing of the old products. Finally, the process ends with the purchasing of recycled goods by the consumers. The more people step forward to buy recycled products the better the success of the recycling process can be ensured.

Importance of Recycling Recycling is incredibly important as a means to reduce poisonous emissions into the atmosphere and also to spare our natural resources. Why is recycling important -Recycling Saves Energy -Recycling Saves Environmental Conditions and Reduces Pollution - Recycling Saves Natural Resources - Economic Benefits - Recycling Saves Space for Waste Disposal

Recyclable Materials Raw or processed material that can be recovered from a waste stream for reuse. List of Recyclable Materials  Paper  Glass  Plastic  Metals  Batteries  Electronic Scrap  Other

Non- Recyclable Materials Non–recyclable paper- wrapping paper that is laminated or contains foreign materials such as foil- coatings or glitter, photographic film etc. Treated or contaminated wood - wood treated with preservatives or attached to other materials like sheetrock or window glass Non–recyclable plastic – some food storage containers, dishware, vinyl, disposable diapers etc. Non–recyclable glass – window glass, mirrors, light bulbs, and cookware Other waste

How to Recycle There are three key factors when thinking about how to recycle - The 3 R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.ReduceReuse Recycle

Reduce Buy only what you need Reduce unnecessary waste by avoiding those pointless purchases. Buy products that can be reused Buy bottles instead of cans and rechargeable batteries.. Buy all-purpose household cleaner Buy products with little packaging Sell or give away unwanted items Reduce paper waste by cancelling unwanted mail

Reuse Carrier bags and twist ties. Envelopes by sticking labels over the address you can reuse envelopes. Jars and pots Newspaper, cardboard and bubble wrap Old clothes can be made into other textile Packaging such as foil and egg cartons can be donated to schools and nurseries, where they can be use in art and craft projects. Scrap paper can be used to make notes and sketches Old tyres can be given to your local petrol station where they will be recycled. Used wood can be used in woodcrafts for making objects such as a spice rack or a bird table. Alternatively it could be used as firewood.

Recycle Find ways of recycling different materials. Many materials can be recycled, such as paper, plastic, metal and glass. Buy products that can be recycled. When shopping at the supermarket, buy products that can be recycled easily such as glass jars and tin cans. Buy products that have been made from recycled material. Avoiding buying hazardous material. Recycle bins. Make sure you have a recycle bin in your home. Keep it in an obvious place so you won't forget to use it. Your local council should be able to provide you with a recycle bin that can be used for materials such as glass, paper, aluminum and plastic.

Recycling in Schools Here are some simple ideas that won't have your principal running away screaming; in fact, some can save or even make your school some money! Recycling bins Tree planting Paper Lighting Food Spare land School newsletter For more information, go to Environmental Management Authority (EMA) mid=1
