Presentations

We have spent the last couple of weeks developing PowerPoints that are an aid for presenters during important presentations When are presentations given? – School – Business Meetings – Weddings – Special Events – Etc.

Presentation With a group of 3 – You are going to brainstorm all the different factors that go into making a good presentation Example: Have you ever been bored out of your mind during a lesson I have given this year? What was missing, what would have made it more informative? – You have 10 minutes to think and write down as many factors as you can

Presentations We are going to break down a presentation into 3 different categories 1.Before the Presentation 2.During the Presentation 3.After the Presentation

BEFORE THE PRESENTATION

Before the Presentation Assignment of roles and responsibilities – I always would suggest, when working with a group, that each member should be the “expert” on various topics throughout the presentation Know your stuff – If you are unprepared for a presentation, it becomes apparent very quickly – Do your research, make cue cards for before hand – Know the most in the room Practice makes perfect! – 2-3 run through will help with timing

Before the Presentation Look the Part – Depending on the type of presentation, clothing can be crucial to how an audience reacts to you Leave Nothing to Chance – Ensure all technical aspects (projector, sound, URL links, videos, etc) are working before you begin you presentation

DURING THE PRESENTATION

During the Presentation Introductions – Introduce yourself, the members of your group and what the topic is that you are going to be talking about An agenda slide is often a good way to introduce your topics – Usually, one person will take care of all of this Talk to Your Audience – Establish eye contact and avoid reading notes/PowerPoint It is ok to use notes, but do not stare at them the entire time

During the Presentation Speak Naturally – Relate to the audience Eg. I would speak differently in a staff meeting than I would a classroom – Use your own words, not the internet or books Straight to the Point – Do not dance around the subject, get right to the point and avoid rambling!

During the Presentation Take Your time – Presenting can be uncomfortable, but be sure not to rush All the audience thinks is “Wow, this dude is talking so fast” and will ignore the information – Use slides to pace yourself Enjoy Yourself – If you have fun with your presentation, so will your audience – Robots do not enjoy themselves Transitions – Easily transfer the “batton” from one classmate to another – Topics should flow together

Segways

During the Presentation Ensure the use of multi-media – Pictures, Video & Music can be a powerful way to elicit a reaction from the audience – Make sure all media is appropriate and adds to the presentation Do not interrupt your group members – Even if they messed something up, wait for them to finish and add into the conversation And another thing...

AFTER THE PRESENTATION

After the Presentation A smooth conclusion is necessary – Ensure the audience knows your presentation is complete by wrapping things up – NO “And that’s it”, “The End”, “I’m Done” – Primacy & Recency Affect Welcome Questions – Remember: You are the most knowledge able person on the topic – Answer any questions the audience may have about your topic

After the Presentation Thank everyone for their time Debrief as a group – Often you will do presentations more than one time – It is always useful to improve on what you have done

TODAY You and a partner are going to give a one minute presentation on ANYTHING – Cars, A sports team, what you are doing tonight, etc. – Make a PowerPoint of maximum 4 slides – Practice good presentation skills and we will critique one another
