What is Technology Integration?  The combination of all technology parts, such as hardware and software, together with each subject- related area of curriculum to enhance learning.  Also known as curriculum integration.  Teachers must remember that technology is only a tool to enhance or support instructional strategies  Teachers should use appropriate technology to enhance learning at the appropriate times and to teach to the standards.  Technology should not drive the curriculum but the curriculum should drive the technology.

Classroom Integration VS Computer Labs and Media Centers  A Computer lab is a designated classroom filled with computers and technology for students to use individually or in groups.  A Media Center contains computers and other relevant technologies.  The biggest advantage of a computer lab and media center is that students are provided hands-on experience with the computer technology.  Research show that computers and related technologies are more effective however, when integrated into subject content and placed in the classroom- at the point of instruction.

Classroom in Action  Point of Instruction- having the technology in the classroom at the teachers and student’s fingertips (ready for use at any time)  Teachable moment- an open window of opportunity for the information to be comprehended in greater detail by students  Virtual Fieldtrips- allow you to walk through doorways, down halls, and let you see everything in a three-dimensional world via a computer as if you were there.

Integrating Technology into the curriculum  Educators recognize that technology can serve as an extremely powerful tool that can help alleviate some of the problems of today’s schools.  Using technology tools with students with varying abilities has helped to address different learning styles and reach diverse learners.  A Learning style refers to how individuals learn, including how they prefer to receive, process, and retain information. They vary among people.

Integrating Technology into the curriculum  The key to successful technology integration is identifying what you are trying to accomplish within your curriculum. Consider what the standards and related learning objectives are Identify and appropriate technology tool that will help you accomplish your instructional goals. Begin to develop innovative ways to teach a diverse population of learners with different learning styles.

Changing Instructional Strategies  When students play a more active role in the learning process, the teacher’s role must change.  Teachers should shift from being the dispenser of knowledge to being the facilitator of learning.  A facilitator of learning motivates students to want to learn, guides the student learning process, and promotes a learning atmosphere and an appreciation for the subject.

Changing instructional Strategies  As teachers become facilitators of learning and incorporate technology into their instructional strategies, they will progress through several developmental stages.  Welliver’s Instructional Transformation Model describes five stages of technology integration through which teachers must progress to integrate technology effectively.

Welliver’s Instructional Transformation Model 1. Familiarization- teachers become aware of technology and its potential uses 2. Utilization- teachers use technology, but minor problems will cause teacher to discontinue its use 3. Integration- technology becomes essential for the education process and teachers are constantly thinking of ways to use technology in their classrooms

Welliver’s Instructional Transformation Model 4. Reorientation- teachers begin to rethink the educational goals of the classroom with the use of technology 5. Revolution- the evolving classroom becomes completely integrated with technology in all subject areas.

Barriers to Technology Integration  For more than two decades, several barriers have hindered technology integration in many schools such as: Lack of teacher training Security constraints that impede instructional strategies Lack of administration support Limited time for teacher planning Budget constraints Lack of high-speed school network Basic resistance to change by many educators

Technology in the Classroom Education

Technology Integration and the learning process  Research shows that using technology in the classroom motivates students, encourages them to become problem solvers, and creates new avenues to demonstrate creative thinking.  Teachers have found that using computers or computer related technologies can capture and hold student’s attention.  When used properly, technology is extremely beneficial in the learning process.

The Learning Process  Authentic Learning experiences are instructional activities that demonstrate real-life connections by associating the concept being taught with a real-life experience or event.  Participatory learning (Secondary learning) occurs when students become engaged in inquiring, investigating, reflecting, solving problems, and formulating and answering questions.  Providing a knowledge base on which students can build is called anchored instruction.  Problem based instruction is when students use the background (anchor) information to begin to solve and understand complex problems or concepts.

Technology and the Learning Process Technology can provide numerous tools to support many types of instruction & learning. Britannica is and interactive multimedia encyclopedia. An application like that allows students to build a cognitive scaffold- mental bridge for building an understanding of complicated concepts. Digital media tools allow students to have learning experiences in which concepts are brought to life with a variety of representations.

Technology and the Learning Process  Using discovery learning, you can break down classroom walls with technology, the Web, and, open doors for imagination.  The Internet and the Web have been called the education equalizer- they give students of all backgrounds, socioeconomic levels, learning styles, geographic locations, academic levels, and learning abilities access to the same information.  The web allows students to experience education opportunities previously not available.

Technology and the Learning Process  Cooperative Learning- refers to a method of instruction in which students work collaboratively in groups to achieve standards and achieve standards and related learning objectives.  Cooperative classroom activities- are student- centered, with the teacher serving as a facilitator and the students as information seekers.  Higher-order thinking skills- are the abilities to solve problems, engage in critical thinking, an interpret and solve complex issues.  By promoting new and enhanced learning experiences, properly integrated technology offers limitless possibilities for instruction and learning.

Strategies for Integrating Technology into Teaching  The best strategy is to put the technology into the hands of trained teachers, make it easily accessible, and let them decide how best to use it at the point of instruction in their classrooms.  Teachers can then use an array of teaching strategies to develop a learning environment in which students are encouraged to be independent learners and take responsibility for their own learning.  One critically important element in effective technology integration is continuous planning.

Planning for Technology Integration in the classroom  Teachers must plan how they will teach the curriculum, what areas they need to cover for content, and where they can use technology to meet curriculum standards and related learning objectives.  In classrooms with only one computer, teachers must plan to maximize the effectiveness of that one computer; the same idea applies to classrooms with multiple computers.  Regardless of how the computer is used, you should develop a strategy for how you will allocate computer use and how students’ computer time will be managed.

Planning for Technology Integration in the classroom  A wireless mobile lab is a portable cart with wireless notebook computers that can be transported from one classroom to another  These mobile labs allow for expanded network capabilities and offer many instructional opportunities for teachers.

Planning lessons in Technology  When planning lessons that use technology, teachers must consider the skills and knowledge level required for students to start and complete the lesson successfully.  A skill assessment survey is designed to identify individual students’ academic and technology skill levels and then create a starting point for developing instructional strategies.  A KWL and KWHL chart is another simple and effective tool to help in the planning process.

Instructional Models  Effective teaching with technology involves using an instructional model- a systematic guide for planning instructions or a lesson.  The ASSURE MODEL is a procedural guide for planning and delivering instruction that integrates technologies and media into the teaching process

Steps of the ASSURE MODEL Emerging technologies will expand teachers’ potential to communicate effectively, to convey ideas, and to motivate, encourage, and educate students. Analyze the learner State objectives Select methods, media, and materials Utilize methods, media, and materials Require learner participation Evaluate and revise

Getting started at a new school  Investigate who else in the school is using technology in their classrooms.  Consult your principal, media specialist, curriculum resource teacher, technology committee members, or other teachers, especially those who teach the same grade level and subjects that you teach.  Your school may have a technology committee that you may consult- school staff who consider, investigate, advise, and make recommendations to the principal and technology coordinator about technology related issues.

Summary  The best strategy for technology integration is to Place technology in the hands of trained teachers Make it easily accessible Let them decide how best to use it in their classrooms at the point of instruction
