MATH 1107 Elementary Statistics Lecture 4 Visualizations of Quantitative Data

As with Categorical Data, it is important to understand how to properly develop the displays necessary for quantitative data. You should be able to use EXCEL to convert quantitative data into the following: histograms timeplots (line charts) scatterplots (2 variables) MATH Visualization

Fun in class exercise!

Lets examine a different perspective of the Titanic passenger* examples in your book: MATH Visualization MenWomenBoysGirlsTotal Survived Died Total * I found discrepancies between the “official” Titanic figures and those provided in the book. In an effort to reduce confusion in class, I have attempted to recreate the gender/age frequencies to match with the totals provided in the book. If you are interested in facts about the passengers of the Titanic, check out

Converting frequency counts into more meaningful and communicative information is an important skill. Specifically, you should be able to convert this data into the following: Marginal percentages Conditional percentages Bar Chart Pie Chart We will execute these in EXCEL – refer to the notes on the website.
