Agenda APA: When to Cite Unit 5 Key Concepts Seminar Discussion Questions Questions/Comments/Concerns

APA Style: When to Cite “Cite the work of those individuals whose ideas, theories, or findings have directly influenced your work even if you are paraphrasing or describing someone else’s idea” (APA, n.d.)

What if it’s “common knowledge” Obesity is a major public health concern in many developed countries including the United States. Nearly 70% of American adults are currently classified as overweight or obese. Overweight and obesity increases the risk for many chronic conditions such as heart diseases, type II diabetes, hypertension and some forms of cancer (CDC, 2009).

How to Reference in Your Work “ Approximately 40% of all meals in the U.S. are now eaten outside the home, a 150% increase since 1977 (French, Story & Jeffrey, 2001) with the vast majority of these meals consumed at fast food restaurants. In fact, 25% of all Americans eat fast food at least once per day, and McDonald’s, the world’s largest fast food establishment serves more than 46 million people daily around the globe (Spurlock, 2005).”

Key Concepts Community – a group of people within a defined geographic locale. Community-based Initiatives – programs with multidisciplinary planning at the local level that involves the community in the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs. Community Health Models – involving all aspects of the community to provide health services. Human Element – considering people as part of the change process. Philanthropy – charity, compassion, benevolence.

Unit Review Key Concepts Lesson 1:Transistion from acute care to preventative care/wellness; 1970s hospitals/medical were focused on acute care & trauma; more recently the emergence of chain hospitals & a declining number of nonprofit or government hospitals to for profit hospitals; 107 million ER visits in U.S. annually, ~1/2 are not emergencies. Lesson 2: Leading to Promote Health & Wellness: CPRS Lesson 3: Holtz Chapter 3, key components of an Ideal Healthcare system

Opening Discussion In Atlanta, GA an urban hospital is facing budget shortfalls and can no longer financially operate. The hospital must close or receive a funding injection from outside sources. The facility serves a high percentage of low-income and African American patients from Fulton & DeKalb counties, without Grady, a large number will not have access to medical care. You are a member of the board for Grady. Who will you ask for money? Why should those people help you? What can you do to fix the problems?

Seminar Question 1 Why does community-based health care work in Bhopal? What is the primary model used in Bhopal to treat symptoms of illness and disease? What are the social implications of Bhopal’s health problems? What are the barriers to implementing a community-based health model in Bhopal?

Seminar Question 2 From the article “Leading...to Promote Health and Wellness” consider the following questions: What are the key components of this program? Why was it successful?
