Animal & Plant adaptations

What is Adaptation? TRAITS that help organisms meet their basic needs and SURVIVE in their SURROUNDINGS. Plants and Animals need PROTECTION from some things around them. –What are some of those things?

2 Types of Adaptations STRUCTURAL –How the plant or animal is made. BEHAVIORAL –How the organism acts or behaves

EXAMPLES of Structural KANGAROO Pouch Woodpecker beak and feet Cactus waxy coating, thorns and wide roots Poison dart frog alarming color!

Examples of Behavioral Herding Instinct when scared Migrating Monarchs to Mexico Migrating Geese Alarmed posture Bird building nest

ADAPTATIONS Cont’ Mimicry Camouflage Hibernation Migration

adaptations Structural Behavioral Camouflage Mimicry Walking stickWalking stick, caterpillar blending into green leaves, lizard blending into surroundings caterpillar blending into green leaves lizard blending into surroundings Coral snake vs. King Snake Monarch butterfly vs. Viceroy butterfly Playing possum Burrowing rabbit Training a dog

CONCLUSION DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER EXAMPLES OF BEHAVIORAL? STRUCTURAL?
