Cell – Engine By: Matt Coy Cell Analogy Cell – Engine By: Matt Coy

Cell Membrane The cell membrane is like the hood and grill because it lets certain substances in and out of the cell.

Cytoplasm Cytoplasm is like the engine mounts because it holds all of the parts of the cell.

Nucleus The nucleus is like the starter system because it causes all of the parts of the cell to function.

Endoplasmic Reticulum The endoplasmic reticulum is like the exhaust valve because it moves the proteins made by the ribosomes.

Ribosomes The ribosomes are like the gasoline because the result of the reaction they perform moves, and can be used throughout the cell.

Nucleolus The nucleolus is like the fuel injection system because it produces the ribosomes in the cell.

Mitochondria The mitochondria are like the battery because they provide the energy needed for the cell to function.

Golgi Body The golgi body is like the pistons because it modifies proteins produced by the ribosomes.

Vacuole The vacoule is like the sump because it holds the materials that the cell needs to carry out its functions.
