The Standards Universe DICOM. HL7. TCP. HTTP. … and infinitely many more.

A Standard A specification of a galaxy of possible ways to communicate a specific category of information.

A Standards Profile A small constellation of applications of the standard for a specific purpose.

An IHE Integration Profile Actor A set of communication transactions between members of a group of Systems (Actors) that accomplish tasks related to one aspect of the workflow of an institution. Examples: Scheduled Workflow Patient Information Reconciliation Transactions

Question How do you specify each transaction? Actor Answer: Start with an applicable standard supported by most products implementing the Actors involved.

Selecting a Specific Implementation of a Specific Standard for a Specific Transaction Actor
