Definition of General Education Approved by College Senate 4/15/13 CCBC’s General Education Program introduces students to a variety of disciplines that build a common foundation of knowledge that promotes responsibility, critical thinking, and lifelong, independent learning. General Education courses prepare students to meet the personal, academic, and career challenges of today and tomorrow as empowered citizens of a global society.

Students will gain experience and skills in: 1. written and oral communication; 2. critical analysis and reasoning; 3. technological competence; 4. information literacy; 5. scientific, quantitative or logical reasoning; 6. local and global diversity, and 7. personal and professional ethics. *Categories highlighted in bold are required by MSCHE.

A Comparison of our Existing Model and Proposed State Changes (slide 1 of 4) Current CCBC ModelProposed State Changes AA/AS Degrees require credits of General Education (BA/BS Degrees require credits) Credits (38-46) AAS Degrees require a minimum of 21 credits of General Education 16 Credits 5 Required Categories: Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Biological and Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and English Composition Same All courses in required categories must be three or more credits Same

A Comparison of our Existing Model and Proposed State Changes (slide 2 of 4) Current CCBC ModelProposed State Changes Two courses in Arts and Humanities from two different disciplines for transfer degrees (One course for AAS degrees) Two courses in Arts and Humanities (One course for AAS degrees) Two courses in Social and Behavioral Sciences from two different disciplines for transfer degrees (One course for AAS degrees) Two courses in Social and Behavioral Sciences (One course for AAS degrees) One course in Mathematics at or above the level of College Algebra One course in Mathematics at or above the level of College Algebra, completed with a grade of “C” or better

A Comparison of our Existing Model and Proposed State Changes (slide 3 of 4) Current CCBC ModelProposed State Changes Optional sixth category: Interdisciplinary and Emerging Issues- up to 8 credits may be required Optional sixth category: Institution- specific General Education Requirements-no number of credits mentioned Courses in Category 6: three-credit courses in Information Technology and Wellness and Health; two-credit courses in Global, Historical, and Cultural Perspectives Courses in ALL Categories must be at least three credits (no more two- credit Gen Ed courses) *Note: CCBC College Senate voted to eliminate two-credit General Education courses as of Fall 2014

A Comparison of our Existing Model and Proposed State Changes (slide 4 of 4) Current CCBC ModelProposed State Changes General Education Mathematics courses—must have a “theoretical” Algebra pre-requisite Definition has been expanded to include both a “theoretical” and an “applied” algebra pre-requisite General Education Mathematics courses must have Intermediate Algebra (MATH 083) as a pre- requisite General Education Mathematics courses may have Intermediate Algebra (MATH 083) OR Intermediate Algebra with Applications (MATH 073) as a pre- requisite

Important Decisions to be made Fall 2013 Number of General Education credits for each degree Distribution of credits for each degree Degree of flexibility in requirements

Major Questions to Consider Should 6 credits of English Composition, ENGL 101 and ENGL 102, be required for all transfer students? Should SPCM 101, Fundamentals of Communication, be required for all students?

Major Questions, continued Should transfer/career students be required to take a Wellness and Health course? Should transfer/career students be required to take an Information Technology course? Should we continue to have and require specially-designated Diversity courses or is it sufficient to have “Diversity” embedded in all General Education courses? Should there be other specially-designated courses?

General Education Review Board (GERB) Policies and Procedures: More Questions How can GERB streamline the course approval process? Should there should be a limit on the number of courses offered in each category? What is a reasonable timeline for courses to be submitted and approved? How will all of this affect GREAT Assessment?

Next Steps Open Fora-September 17, 3-4 PM, Essex and September 25, 3-4 PM, Catonsville Additional Open Fora to be scheduled in January, GERB deliberation throughout Fall 2013; recommendations to CIC/Senate by February, 2014.
