Agenda item 7: Dialogue with Countries PARIS21

PARIS21 Collaboration with Countries PARIS21 assists developing countries in the design, implementation, and monitoring of national strategies for the development of statistics (NSDSs) in order to have, inter alia, nationally owned and produced data for all MDG indicators and all development policy needs. PARIS21 supports country NSDS processes primarily through the following types of activities: 1.regional programs; 2.advocacy and the development of statistical advocacy tools; 3.promotion of donor collaboration; 4.development of NSDS methodology; and 5.satellite programs.

PARIS21 Regional Programs Past activities in Asia have included the organization of regional forums on strategic statistical planning. Current and future activities in the region will increasingly focus on country-based activities and include various components such as: the promotion of partnership; the mobilization of technical and financial resources; and on-demand advisory services to countries.

PARIS21 Advocacy Activities flyers highlighting “Why Country X Needs Good Statistics” booklets summarising the major components of an individual country’s NSDS

PARIS21 Donor Collaboration Partner Report on Support to Statistics (PRESS) demonstrates who is doing what and where in support to statistical capacity building. Reporting  Information exchange  Collaboration Rationale: Improve partner harmonisation and collaboration through information exchange Identify countries/areas requiring support Define funding strategies in context of NSDS

PARIS21 Development of NSDS Methodology Methodological guidance for countries interested in pursuing strategic planning for statistics. Among the papers recently produced are studies exploring the following: 1.the relationship between statistics and monitoring and evaluation, 2.good practices for an NSDS document, 3.financing and costing NSDS implementation, 4.integrating data archiving processes into NSDSs, 5.lessons from recent large-scale evaluations of statistical capacity-building initiatives. Documents available here:

PARIS21 Satellite Programs International Household Survey Network (IHSN) 1.to promote the better use of survey microdata 2.to improve the quality of future surveys Accelerated Data Program (ADP) 1.documentation, preservation, and dissemination of existing survey microdata 2.analysis of existing survey data and assessment of past survey programs 3.development of improved survey programs and data collection. In Asia, the following countries have been involved or will soon be involved in ADP tasks: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Fiji, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Some 400 high-level participants from around the world — policy makers, statisticians, and civil society representatives from developing countries, donor countries, and multilateral organisations. To discuss the state of statistical development and the way forward for statistical co-operation. To form a commitment on the roles of each actor in supporting statistical development.

PARIS21 Collaboration with Countries PARIS21 is eager to work more closely with Asian countries and institutions.
