Ciemat Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas Daniel Cano-Ott, DAQ meeting in Huelva, July 18 th and 19 th Fit to True shape method: n/  discrimination + pileup reconstruction Neutrons Photons Excellent n/  discrimination + pileup reconstruction (tests with a Deuterium /Tritium source). C. Guerrero et al., submitted to NIMA

Ciemat Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas Daniel Cano-Ott, DAQ meeting in Huelva, July 18 th and 19 th Needs for the DESPEC array: Time resolution ~1ns. Set a 10 keV ee threshold. Set a 20 MeVee range. Good n/  discrimination down to low neutron energies. Reasonable cost ~1000 € per channel (commercial units 4000 € per channel) Such characteristics could be reached with a 12 bit and 1 Gsample/s (500 MHz bandwidth) flash ADC. No commercial digitiser of such characteristics is available at present time and when, it will cost about 4000 €/channel. Such a digitiser could be considered as a universal ADC optimal for a wide range of detector types. Combined know how at CIEMAT (electronics and nuclear physics group): -20 years of experience in electronics for particle physics experiments at CERN. -Electronics for the CMS experiment at CERN. -Electronics for the AMS experiment at the International Space Station. -Detector design. -Digital DAQ software for n_TOF experiment at CERN (50 channels, 8 bit, 1 Gsamples/s) -Pulse shape analysis algorithms.

Ciemat Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas Daniel Cano-Ott, DAQ meeting in Huelva, July 18 th and 19 th Develop such a digitiser at CIEMAT Two interlaced 500 Msamples/s 12 bit ADCs. FPGA + fast enough DSP. 2 Gbytes on board memory. On board pulse shape analysis OR fast data transmission. fast data bus (not yet decided). Cost estimate: 1000 – 1300 € Solution 1 1 channel board coupled directly to the detector: low noise, no cables, on-line pulse shape analysis, potentially low transfer rate. Solution 2 Multichannel boards on a VME (or equivalent) bus. Time schedule 1 st Phase. Prototype board by end of nd Phase. Single channel board or VME multi channel module + event building module. End of Industrial production in st funding request made already (waiting for the evaluation). If positive, then… Next funding request for Production of 150 channels in 2010 to be negotiated as a Spanish in-kind contribution to DESPEC.

Ciemat Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas Daniel Cano-Ott, DAQ meeting in Huelva, July 18 th and 19 th The project has not even started. Many open questions! Platform: single boards, VME cards ??? Characteristics of the boards: input range, amplification… Data bus? How to collect the data and build an event? Which type of module? How to integrate the flash ADCs into the DESPEC/HISPEC DAQ?
