~Sociology~ Internship Eligibility & Expectations Created by Daniel Farr, August 2015

Eligibility  90 credit hours completed  Pre-requisite course:  Social Organization (SOCI3304)  Required minimum GPA of 2.0  KSU Adjusted GPA

Additional Recommendations  Recommended course:  Social Theory (SOCI3300)  Broad background within the Sociology major (upper-level) and in your concentration  This experience will better enable you to choose an appropriate location for your internship  This will also foster appropriate writing skills and academic background to successfully engage the written activities of internship

Credits & Hours Clarification  The number of credits of internship you may earn is contingent on the number of hours spent at your internship site  3 credit hours = 150 hours at site  ~10 hours per week in a 15 week semester  ~18-20 hours per week in an 8 week semester  6 credit hours = 300 hours at site  9 credit hours = 450 hours at site

Basic Activities & Assessments (Please also review posted sample syllabus)  On site 1. Time log* 2. Mid-semester site evaluation* 3. Final site evaluation* 4. Field notes  Off site 1. D2L discussion 2. Papers a. Site Information b. Literature review c. Linking to Sociology 3. Presentation 4. Site summary sign * Indicates materials to be filled out with or signed by site coordinator

Grading  Based on the successful completion of course activities a course grade is assigned using the grade weights as found in the syllabus  A, B, C, D, F  Impacts your GPA

Internship Across Multiple Semesters  While most students engage in only one internship in a single semester, you may engage in more than one across multiple semesters  Same site – multiple semesters  Different site – secondary semester(s)

Secondary semester(s) of Internship at Same Site  If continuing at the same site for additional semester(s), you will not be expected to engage in the “Off Site” activities previously described, but must successfully engage the “On Site” activities.  With successful completion of On Site activities, the student will be assigned the same course grade as in their first semester  If the student seeks a different course grade, then both On Site and Off Site activities must be pursued with different research topics for the course papers and presentation

Secondary semester(s) of Internship at a New Site  If a student desires to pursue a secondary internship in a new or different location, they must engage all course activities as described in the course syllabus  Essentially, this is an entirely new internship, requiring entirely new work  The course grade will be determined by the work submitted during the semester
