10-1 Simplifying Rational Expressions 9P12:Simplify rational expressions

Remember Can only simplify whole binomials or trinomials that are equal- not in parts!! Ex1:Ex 2: Binomials that match will cancel because no matter what you put in for x, you get the same numerator and denominator =1 !!! Binomials here do not cancel. If you put a number in for x, you do not get the same numerator and denominator ≠1 !!

Example 3 Monomial Reduce To reduce (divide) exponents-subtract

Example 4) GCF Monomial Binomial Can’t be reduced further

Example 5 GCF We can’t cancel parts of binomial so we are done

Example 6 Don’t forget your factor flowchart to help factor binomials and trinomials The numerator Difference of squares Remember to turn trinomial back to FOIL

Example 7 Learn the -1 trick!! If binomials have the right coefficients but opposite sign factor out a -1
