SWBAT simplify monomial expressions using the negative exponent property and the zero exponent property. June 28, 2011

Zero Exponents Any number or variable raised to the zero power equals One Ex: x 0 =1 7 0 = =_____

Negative Exponents A base raised to the negative exponent is the reciprocal of the exponent. Change the exponent to a faction, with 1 in the numerator and the exponent changed to positive in the denominator. x -n = _1_ X n Ex: y -5 = = 1 = 1 Y

In order to change an exponent to a fraction: 1) Put 1 in the numerator position. 2) Reverse the value of the exponent 3) Place the base and exponent value in the denominator position x -n = _1_ X n Ex: y -5 = = 1 = 1 Y

3x -2 =
