iSchool Contributions to Bibliometrics As Measured by Publications Kathleen Padova, March 2015

Original Schema

Contribution via Publications Query Web of Science: TOPIC: (bibliometrics or scientometrics or informetrics or altmetrics) Timespan: All years. Indexes: SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, A&HCI Extract Full Records Import into Excel Collect authors, institutions Clean up/parse authors, institutions into institution- author pairs Begin counting…

Data Issues/Resolutions Authors cannot be used as primary metric alone Personal Name Inconsistency Authors can have multiple institutional affiliations during career (and even on same publication) Will need to tabulate metric at Institution level if we want to judge impact of the iSchool Aggregate publication counts per iSchool Counts by publication or by author (count becomes inflated if multiple authors from same institution authored same publication)

Data Issues/Resolutions Decided to count contribution for each author-institution pair Multiple authors from same institution would be counted separately 5 authors from same intuitions counts as 5 contributions. No special weighting or evaluation for primary author vs. additional author or principal investigators iSchool mapping to WoS institution field semi- subjective (manual resolution) Institution naming inconsistency (manual resolution)

Results WoS query – 2630 records Of the 2630 records, 2341 had institutional field populated After parsing author/institutions fields: 5632 institution-author pairs institutions alone (no authors). [6947 records] After mapping institutions to iSchools: 379 count records 40 of the 59 iSchools represented

Future work Incredibly small sample size (379 records). What publications are not represented in Web of Science? Possibly add weighting to level of iSchool contribution per author-institution pair (by author role, principle investigator, % project funding, etc.) iSchool name inconstancy in Publications Historical name changes Publication variation iSchool Names Authority incl. past names?
