One of the first tasks of the group will be to form a governing council for the new settlement. You will generate ideas for the way they would choose leaders and how they would make and enforce rules. How have your ideas been influenced by your heritage? How do you think the English heritage influenced the setting up of America’s new government?

Homework Review Great Awakening- American Revolution How did they influence our government?

Philosophers that Influenced our Government Many of the rights that American citizens enjoy today can be traced back to the political and legal traditions of England. When English people began settling here in the 1600s, they brought with them a history of limited and representative government.

Where did the framers get the ideas for our government? English settlers in American colonies established traditions that they had learned in England.

John Locke (English) How did his ideas about government influence American government? His policy proposals for checks and balances later followed in the US Constitution. He believed that revolution in some circumstances was an obligation. He argued for broad religious freedom

Thomas Hobbs (English) How did his ideas about government influence American government? A diverse group of representatives would prevent a sovereign from being cruel and unfair. To offset the growing influence of business, a representative could speak in government on behalf of the people.

Jean Jacques Rousseau (French) How did his ideas about government influence American government? He fought for individual freedom. He also fought against the absolute power of church and state.

Baron de Montesquieu (French) How did his ideas about government influence American government? Montesquieu was credited with the identification of the separation of powers as a good model of government- the king, parliament, and the courts. Each branch of government would limit the power of the other two branches.

Review for Quiz John Locke once said, “Every man has a property in his own person. This nobody has a right to, but himself.” -People have rights that have been inherited. Life, Liberty, and Property.

The US constitution divides our government into 3 branches. Which philosopher first described this method of organizing government? Montesquieu

The US Constitution’s concept of popular sovereignty is founded on the belief that a government is created by and subject to the will of its people.

John Locke’s idea of consent of the governed is reflected in the Declaration of Independence.

The Magna Carta’s declaration that “no freeman shall be imprisoned except by the lawful judgment of his peers” reflects the US Constitutional right to a jury trial.

The English Bill of Rights of 1689 states that ‘Suspending laws by regal authority without consent of Parliament is illegal.” In our constitution, we therefore have limited the executive power to reflect the English Bill of Rights.

Which aspect of the American government system was influenced by the Magna Carta? 1. Bicameral legislature 2. executive vetoes 3. democratic elections 4. limited authority

The Declaration of Independence suggests that the primary purpose of government is to serve and protect its citizens.

The English Bill of Rights of 1689 most directly influenced our government by stating rulers are bound to the law.
