International Affairs

Mission and Values Statement The mission of International Affairs is to strengthen the global and international dimensions of teaching, learning, research and service at MTSU. We believe that: The promotion of global awareness, knowledge and proficiency should be intrinsic to MTSU; Global and international awareness, knowledge and proficiency are essential for MTSU students to participate effectively in the 21st century; International education is an orientation and approach across the curriculum as well as a separate subject; and, International education at MTSU should be an integrated and collaborative effort on the part of all levels of the education establishment.

Over the past two years, participation in Fall semester programs has increased over 200% while Summer participation increased 38%. Summer includes May term, as well as regular summer session terms. Winter refers to programs which occur during the December- January break between semesters.

According to the latest Open Doors figures ( ), U.S. students are most likely to participate in education abroad during their junior year (36%), followed by their senior year (23%), sophomore year (13%), and finally freshman year (3%). Nationally the gender ratio in education abroad has remained fairly constant over the past ten years – 64% female and 36% male. MTSU’s gender breakdown shows a more skewed distribution between genders.

In comparison to national trends for the last year of available data ( ), the top three host regions in education abroad were Europe (55%), The Americas (16%), and Asia (12%). Compared to , increases were found in all regions except Europe. Top 10 Countries*TOTAL 1.France43 2.Italy34 3.United Kingdom33 4.Canada27 5.Costa Rica23 5.Japan23 7.Germany19 8.Denmark16 8.Israel16 8.Taiwan16 *Some students visited multiple countries during a single program.

Roughly half of MTSU Study Abroad participants were from only one of the seven colleges on campus (College of Liberal Arts).

The most important thing that schools can do is to make people aware that understanding the world is very much part of the requirement of being an educated person. There should be some shame attached to not being more aware of the world. Fareed Zakaria College must prepare students to adapt and respond effectively to whatever international problems and opportunities may confront them later in life, but how we accomplish this remains clouded by uncertainty and confusion. Derek Bok

Thank you and welcome to MTSU.
