With the discovery of new minerals and depletion of old ones, Nevada’s population continued to rise and fall. Source: U.S. Census

In addition to the major happenings in Nevada, some smaller things were happening as well. Check them out below. New mining towns were popping up Nevada gains more land Ranching becomes more important Basque immigrants settle in Nevada Women were fighting for the right to vote Las Vegas gets its first school

William M. Stewart William’s interest in mining is what brought him West. He was a mining lawyer and later became Nevada’s first United State’s senator. He helped write the 15 th Amendment, which gave men of all races the right to vote. Hannah K. Clapp Hannah opened a school in Carson City called the Sierra Seminary. She was very involved in education, later becoming the first professor of English and History for the University of Nevada, Reno, as well as a librarian. She also supported women’s rights.

The end of the 19 th century was particularly hard for Nevadan’s. The mines were drying up and people were moving out to find work in other areas. Economic hardships from mining to ranching were felt. The state needed to find a way to bring new jobs and build up it’s failing economy. With the beginning of the 20 th century just around the corner, Nevada would be faced with a new set of challenges.
