Lo: To evaluate if binge drinking is a problem for young people.

Binge Drinking What does it actually mean to binge drink? The NHS definition of binge drinking is drinking lots of alcohol in a short space of time or drinking to get drunk or feel the effects of alcohol The amount of alcohol someone needs to drink in a session for it to be classed as ‘bingeing’ is less clearly defined but the marker used by the NHS and National Office of Statistics is drinking more than double the daily unit guidelines for alcohol in one session.

Guess the calories? Binge drinking is not just about the damage done short term. Binge drinking can actually be calorific! Can you guess how many calories are in the following drinks?

Half a litre of vodka and 2 litres of coke…

1130 calories That’s the same as a Big Mac, Fries and a coke!

A Bottle of white wine…

Approx 400 calories That’s about the same as some Chinese chicken with cashew nuts and rice!

A 2 litre bottle of strongbow

1000 calories! That’s the same as 5 doughnuts!

Smirnoff Ice (standard bottle)

176 calories That’s almost a standard bag of Walkers crisps!

WKD Blue

228 calories That’s the same as a bar of cadburys!

Is binge drinking a problem for young people today? What are the affects of binge drinking? Watch the following clip and consider how binge drinking has affected those involved. qaM
